Merry Christmas!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin (Rob) @ 1:01 pm

It was week 3 of 52 To Change the World and I spent most of it in airport departure lounges, standing on train platforms, shoveling snow off cars. I want to rig my life so I spend less of it traveling somehow but I don’t want to give up the joy of learning to live in another country…
Anyway, I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and New Year and really don’t eat too many mince pies – Mr Kipling and his friends are wealthy enough already! x

Welcome to week three of 52tochangetheworld! This week finds me with a sore throat, worn out old guitar strings and almost no rehearsal time! Hopefully this cheerful song will still shine through...
I haven't seen anyone use this guitar technique before for a whole song but I guess someone must have done right? Let me know with a comment on this post or an email if you have seen it 'cos I'm really curious. I reckon the harmonics sound a bit like Christmas bells:-).
Anyway, I wasn't sure whether to make this song a Christmas card for my friends or week three of '52'. In the end I ran out of time and settled for both. Merry Christmas one and all and maybe we can bring a bit of Christmas spirit into every day of 2010! x
Decorations by the fireplace
Presents under the tree
Children laughing, dancing
In their yuletide reverie
All their stockings were full
Now they're emptied all over the floor

Board games on the table
Carols on the radio
It's warm inside still we decide
We're playing in the snow
It's December
But we could do this any time of year

Christmas is not just for Christmas
We can give all year round

Some old film on the TV
That Grandma loves to see
Aunts and Uncles Mum and Dad
Everyone can be
Together today
Seems like everybody's here

Bad jokes in crackers
But we're laughing all the same
Silly Christmas hats
You have to wear one don't complain
It's December
But it could be anytime of year

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun, our lives would be if we did this every day...

52 To Change The World

Filed under: Collection — admin (Rob) @ 4:14 pm

Week 8: Food Can’t Make You Happy – A song about a healthy relationship with food.
Week 7: Money Don’t Matter – Money put in context…
Week 6: Rather Die – My feelings on testing animals for medical research
Week 5: The Free Software Song – The importance of free software for the hope of a free society
Week 4: Pigs – Exploring the misery of factory farmed pigs
Week 3: Christmas is not just for Christmas -We can celebrate every day!
Week 2: Last Human – The planet is bigger than our petty litle obsessions!
Week 1: I Belong – Living in the moment

I want to help you. That is the best of me.
The songs you will find here are written with a purpose:

to bring out the best in you.

I will write 52 of them in all. Hopefully one a week. You see I have realised that whatever happiness I can achieve on my own is purely transient. For me to be fulfilled, everyone must be fulfilled.

Writing and playing songs may be the deepest truest thing I have right now. In order to share this joy I want to open it up to you. I want you to suggest subjects for me to write on. I will be writing songs on human rights, animal welfare, the environment or maybe just purely to inspire but I’m sure you can think of all sorts of exciting causes for me to get my teeth into. If you are a musician and wish to collaborate then I’m open to it.

Most importantly I would like you to vote and tell me (on each song’s page there is a little gadget to do this) which of my songs you like the most. Because at the end of my 52 weeks I’m going to pick the most popular 12 and record an album with the musicians I’ve met along the way.

This album is something we will create together to bring out the best in each other. I hope you can be part of it.

peace, love and other new age cliches,

Rob

Week two…

Filed under: Blog — admin (Rob) @ 9:37 pm

Well I wrote a song and I like it. Simplified some things about the way I write that makes life easier for me and probly the listener as well. Unfortunately I got a bit carried away with the video (watch the slide show at the end). It may not look like much but I can tell you with command line tools on a nine year old laptop it’s no small feat!

Anyhow, I’m going to prioritise a bit better next week and sort out some of the features this website really needs. Going home for xmas. Looking forward to seeing my mum again and the rest of the family on Christmas day. Expect a Christmas song next week!

Merry Xmas x

Welcome to week two of 52tochangetheworld! Did a nice slideshow for the video this week. It's at the end so listen to the whole song! For those of you who are interested I used ImageMagick on Gentoo Linux on my G3 ibook. Pretty awesome use of old technology if I do say so myself:-) As it happens the song is not unrelated to this. I had a sort of vision of the last human alive keeling over to die having left the lights turned on. (I have an odd sense of humour perhaps...) We impatiently burn away the earth's resources and we don't realise that nature is growing *for* us. It could do so much for us if we were only patient enough to let it. Don't get me wrong - I love technology. In fact I'm a bona-fide nerd... I just think it is more valuable when it encourages patience and altruism (think open source/linux) than shiny gadgets that claim they'll solve all your problems! Anyway, songwriting-wise this one reminds me pleasantly of Peter Gabriel. See what you think...
Every day we tread the capitalist techno-mill
A pseudo connection to the world for good or for ill
Shiny plastic and metal gadgets entertain us still
Circuits trained to instantaneously execute our will

The last human left the light on
And the flowers began to bloom once again
This world is bigger and older than all of us
and more majestic than any of our miscreations

There's something you should slow down and see
It matters to me, it matters to me

We worship at the altar of bigger, faster, cheaper
Economies get stronger while every day our bodies they grow weaker
Toys are wonderful things but we teach our kids they should play nice
Not tear apart our playpen with impatience, insecurity and vice

We are stewards, not lords
But together we are the earth
People are effect, not cause
Together we are the earth.
