Rough’n'Tough Drums

Filed under: Blog — admin (Rob) @ 9:22 pm

Went to a rehearsal studio today and practiced some drums (I only have a set of quiet pads at home – I have that much respect for everyone else in the street…). Got an updated recording for Respect with drums. They’re very rough:-). Going to practise some more tomorrow then I’m going back on Wednesday to get a pristine version. Basically very pleased with it though.

University Challenge is on in the background and it’s my old uni – Imperial. Needless to say, I can’t answer any of the questions…

Think the unthinkable

Filed under: Blog — admin (Rob) @ 11:23 pm

So I’m real busy right now what with 52tochangetheworld, the other tracks I’m recording, the other websites I’m doing, not to mention everything else that’s my life! So I did what I never do…

I recorded some wah-guitar and backing vocals for “Respect“. They sounded like a good idea to me but sadly not tight enough with quite a few mistakes. Instead of throwing the lot away and going back to rehearsing I chopped them about with Ardour (the recording software I use). The results are surprisingly good. The other instruments, bass, acoustic guitar, piano are done in one take. The trumpet involved a little cut and splice but this time I really did rip the backing vocals and guitar to bits and put them together again!

I gotta admit there’s some advantages to doing things like this. It totally takes the fear out of recording knowing that I can basically remove my mistakes and fiddle around with it till it sounds good. Dare I ask if the difference is noticeable…? ;-)

Anyway, there’s still some more backing vocals, a polished up main vocal line, bongos, tambourine and live drums to go before I start mixing. I know pretty much what I’m going to play and feel buoyed up by my success today! Gonna go watch “Heroes” now then post this version of Respect up on the page. It’ll be up by midnight!

Works In Progress

Filed under: Sticker — admin (Rob) @ 6:51 pm

Were I employed by a record label they would be my bosses and I would be to some extent accountable to them for the work I produce. Since I am a creative commons independent artist I am accountable only to you – the listener. So instead of me just creating music and dishing it out I should really involve you in the creative process!

To that end I’ll be posting some of my works in progress for you to evaluate and give me your opinions. Feel free to tear things to bits or just be encouraging – whatever takes your fancy. I’ll only delete the posts if they’re truly abusive;-).

First track up is Respect – A love poem to the protest marcher!

When I’ve created a piece of music I get the most amazing pleasure listening to it – having seen it grow from something undefined to something clear and wonderful. Perhaps if you are involved in the process in this way you can experience some of that. I’m sure my music will improve as a result because it won’t be mine anymore but ours. Maybe it always was…

Animal Rights Information Request

Filed under: Sticker — admin (Rob) @ 2:50 pm

For my 52tochangetheworld project I am going to write some songs on the subject of animal rights. The first of these: “Pigs” is already available. However, in future I would like more than just my own research. If anyone has any information/opinions on the subject areas of ominvorism vs vegetarianism vs veganism, animal rights, fish, dairy etc please give them either as comments on this page, emails to me or as suggested links/comments in my 52tochangetheworld Diigo group .

I would like to make these songs thought provoking standard bearers for the truth – whatever that may be. Whether you are a protester, farmer, animal-lover, a vegan/vegetarian/ominvore I want your views and would be honored if you would help me.

Rob

Welcome to week four of 52tochangetheworld! This song is the first where I've actually researched a specific topic. I tried to broaden my knowledge base a bit in the process. Here ( Diigo - 52tochangetheworld - Pigs ) are some of the more interesting results of that exercise. You can read my comments as well hopefully. If you fancy joining Diigo (it is pretty awesome IMO:-) and chipping in this could turn into more of a discussion. Be sure to use the 'pigs' tag (case sensitive) for anything you share so it appears in this list. Alternatively leave a comment on this post or email me. I want to learn from you.

Researching for this song was a little shocking for me. I thought I was cynical enough but watching some of the videos of the conditions these poor animals are forced to live in - even the videos/descriptions by the meat industry themselves were beyond cruel - for once even I don't have words for something. It struck me as odd that we use the word 'pig' as a derisory term and yet 'humane' somehow is used positively. It is us humans who regularly commit inhumane acts such as these. So I walked a mile on piggy trotters and here's the result. Enjoy.
Just because we're so smart
We don't have to be dull
See it's cool here in the mud so we play
We may have trotters for feet but we dream just like you
You know at night we even sing to our babes
We may have been bred, to be bacon and ham
But that don't mean that we're not worthy of life
So we'd appreciate a little discernment from you as to
Where you stick your fork and your knife

Who you callin' Pigs?
You're gonna spoil our good name
You gotta be kiddin me
When you say humane

You lock us in crates
To give birth to our young
We never even get to see the outside
200 of us in ten meters by twelve
You wouldn't do this to the worst of our kind
We may have been bred
To be sausage and pork
But that don't mean we should be tortured and killed
Five months of hell then you slaughter our hides
That's why I hope you burn yourself on your grill!
