Went to a rehearsal studio today and practiced some drums (I only have a set of quiet pads at home – I have that much respect for everyone else in the street…). Got an updated recording for Respect with drums. They’re very rough:-). Going to practise some more tomorrow then I’m going back on Wednesday to get a pristine version. Basically very pleased with it though.
University Challenge is on in the background and it’s my old uni – Imperial. Needless to say, I can’t answer any of the questions…
So I’m real busy right now what with 52tochangetheworld, the other tracks I’m recording, the other websites I’m doing, not to mention everything else that’s my life! So I did what I never do…
I recorded some wah-guitar and backing vocals for “Respect“. They sounded like a good idea to me but sadly not tight enough with quite a few mistakes. Instead of throwing the lot away and going back to rehearsing I chopped them about with Ardour (the recording software I use). The results are surprisingly good. The other instruments, bass, acoustic guitar, piano are done in one take. The trumpet involved a little cut and splice but this time I really did rip the backing vocals and guitar to bits and put them together again!
I gotta admit there’s some advantages to doing things like this. It totally takes the fear out of recording knowing that I can basically remove my mistakes and fiddle around with it till it sounds good. Dare I ask if the difference is noticeable…?
Anyway, there’s still some more backing vocals, a polished up main vocal line, bongos, tambourine and live drums to go before I start mixing. I know pretty much what I’m going to play and feel buoyed up by my success today! Gonna go watch “Heroes” now then post this version of Respect up on the page. It’ll be up by midnight!
Were I employed by a record label they would be my bosses and I would be to some extent accountable to them for the work I produce. Since I am a creative commons independent artist I am accountable only to you – the listener. So instead of me just creating music and dishing it out I should really involve you in the creative process!
To that end I’ll be posting some of my works in progress for you to evaluate and give me your opinions. Feel free to tear things to bits or just be encouraging – whatever takes your fancy. I’ll only delete the posts if they’re truly abusive;-).
First track up is Respect – A love poem to the protest marcher!
When I’ve created a piece of music I get the most amazing pleasure listening to it – having seen it grow from something undefined to something clear and wonderful. Perhaps if you are involved in the process in this way you can experience some of that. I’m sure my music will improve as a result because it won’t be mine anymore but ours. Maybe it always was…
For my 52tochangetheworld project I am going to write some songs on the subject of animal rights. The first of these: “Pigs” is already available. However, in future I would like more than just my own research. If anyone has any information/opinions on the subject areas of ominvorism vs vegetarianism vs veganism, animal rights, fish, dairy etc please give them either as comments on this page, emails to me or as suggested links/comments in my 52tochangetheworld Diigo group .
I would like to make these songs thought provoking standard bearers for the truth – whatever that may be. Whether you are a protester, farmer, animal-lover, a vegan/vegetarian/ominvore I want your views and would be honored if you would help me.
