I know some people are against animal husbandry full stop but I really like the sound of what you just described. The animals are here and so are we so why not do something to our mutual advantage... I still have this feeling that I couldn't slaughter an animal myself though. Am I just a squeamish wimp I wonder? If they actually get a better life than they would in the wild I can see there's a trade there albeit a rather grizzly one. Something in me longs for a day where we keep them for the fertilizer etc but don't kill them. That would require some modifications to our capitalist system I think! Thanks. Did you know, a sow can have 2 litters a year and each litter can be up to 12 piglets. They are quite a commitment! My parents kept one sow as a pet, but farmed the offspring to sell meat to the village and stock up our freezer. The pigs were free range and well looked after - they had plenty of mud, walnut trees and shelter so I would say as happy as possible. We used to feed the pigs leftover food scraps and bones - they eat everything and love it. But we had a rule, where we wouldn't feed them our leftovers if it was pork - just seemed wrong!
